GUEST BLOG: GEMMA HIRST

Meeting NORTH
So when the arts in the north east are suffering due to cut backs (that is another story) as a fellow performer the moral on that subject is low. However when you meet a company of enthusiastic graduates whose passion for the arts is mutual then your love for the arts returns.

Those graduates that I mention just happen to form NORTH Theatre Company. Northern Stage’s new associate theatre company, North are a company put together by Northern Stage in January and its aim is to support the best up and coming talent from performance graduates in the North East.

The talented young actors rummaged and researched through the Tyne and wear archives. Have managed to come up with a play that is based on the man who thought the moon would fall out of the sky. Now I am sworn to secrecy and I promised I wouldn’t say too much about their play, so I won’t. What I will say that NORTH use creative performance techniques to tell a curious tale of a man’s life. A man who was fascinated by the moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYk442U13pI&feature=youtu.be

Rehearsals
I was fortunate to watch NORTH rehearsing. To see them generating a variety of ideas was inspiring. The group think outside the box, going into detail they seem to know what each other are thinking. Just shows the camaraderie between them. Sometimes if NORTH loses their sense of direction then they are soon set back on track, with their director Susan Mulholland.

The company are going from strength to strength since their previous show in March and are gaining some great support from the likes of the Art Council. After watching their rehearsals, I look forward to seeing the show develop into a performance which will, I’m sure be out of this world. NORTH is set to be blowing the minds of audiences at the Latitude Festival in July:. The company have been booked by high profile festivals that will be touring over the summer such as, Bestivalin September:  and Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the prestigious venue of St Stephens with Northern Stage in August. NORTH Theatre Company are the first young company in the region to be programmed by venues such as these and I am over the moon with joy for them (excuse the pun).
