Our first year together...

Well, well, well, what a year it's been for NORTH aka 'The Letter Room'...
This time last year, whilst we were all sitting at home drinking our tea, there is no-way we could have known what this year would bring; we didn't even know each others bloody names! Yet here we are...

Just look at the pure joy on our slightly chubby faces ^^^ Now the seven of us are best mates, have made a show, formed a company officially known as 'The Letter Room' and toured to some of the biggest festivals this year.

It was about this time last year that we all wrote our applications to Northern Stage to be part of NORTH - and how lucky we all feel to have been selected.

The three months that we spent at Northern Stage under the guidance of Mark Calvert, Kylie Lloyd and Susan Mulholland (amongst many many more wonderful people) was a truly brilliant experience. We worked our socks off, met inspiring people, learnt loads about important theatre things and also had many a night crying into our pillows (joking, sort of).

The support that the building gave us allowed us to grow more confident in our ability in all areas from marketing to finance and feel comfortable enough to ask for help whenever we needed it.

"Expect great things from North, surely one of the most vibrant and engaging entries into the theatre circuit in years." whatsonstage.com

One of many highlights for us was working with the lovely Rachael Walton of Third Angel and making history by not being able to stick a simple map together. However, we got there in the end and made an interesting little piece of theatre which we performed in Stage Three - we actually stole loads of Rachael's exercises in making our final show - so thank-you very much!

Another highlight was the Annual Dinner - The technical team did an AMAZING job transforming Stage One into a mystical forest and we were lucky enough to be asked by Jane to perform some music and a few monologues to the guests. Having only been together a few weeks, rehearsing songs on top of everything else was a big challenge, but after lots of practising we got some tunes together and had a fantastic evening. The people we met at this event were absolutely fantastic, including many Northern Stage board members who are still very supportive of the company.

Here we all are in action...

I shall honestly never forget the taste of Alfie's earl grey panna cotta.

The other thing I should probably mention is, our show!

THE MAN WHO THOUGHT THE MOON WOULD FALL OUT OF THE SKY

We actually did it. After many weeks stuck in a rehearsal room above The Peoples Theatre (many many thanks to The Hawk and all at The Peoples - we love you) we managed to get our little heads together and come up with a show. The devising process was not an easy one, for some of us we were losing our devising virginity, but luckily Mark Calvert was there to guide us (I realise that sounds weird now I've mentioned Mark, but just look past that, it's a good description). We also had Susan with us too (which makes this sound even weirder, like some sort of Northern Stage devising orgy... anyway, moving on). Susan was there as a writer and supported us in the development of the script. We also wrote lots of original music, created scenes and characters and ended up telling the story of a man called Ernest who had an obsession with the moon and a lover called She. Since our opening night at Northern Stage, we've had great fun performing it to many different crowds and have since then developed the show from its original form as we all felt that we didn't quite have time to finish it - and like any show, it may change again!

"North, the associate company of Northern Stage, comprises recent graduates and emerging artists. You wouldn't know it, however, each performance is flawless and a credit to an energetic and creative devising process that the company so clearly enjoys." whatsonstage.com

Creating a show that we were all so proud to be a part of was a massive achievement for us as a new theatre company - and then it got even better.

We were given an opportunity to take our show out of the North East and tour to three of the biggest festivals in the country - Latitude, Bestival and of course, St Stephens at The Edinburgh Fringe.

The feeling of walking onto a stage, in a packed out theatre tent and performing a show with your mates is one of the best feelings that we have all experienced to date. We also had an amazing time getting drunk and watching bands - Maria almost wee'd herself at the sight of Elton John - she definitely new every single cringey word.

A special thank-you goes to the technical team for all of their guidance during our tour - taking two vans full of set on a ferry to an island and then straight up to Edinburgh is not an easy task, but we did it thanks to them.
And if you were wondering, yes Chris Slater (Production Manager) is wearing glitter and yes Emma Roxburgh (Participation Facilitator) does look amazing dressed as a shark.

"If you are a young company such as North, comprised of recent graduates and now embarking on their debut tour after a run at Northern Stage, it must be a daunting prospect [performing at Latitude].The company needn’t have worried however, as their production of The Man Who Thought The Moon Would Fall Out of the Sky launched Latitude’s 2013 theatre line up with style and kept that critical audience hanging on every word." The Public Reviews

"It’s an accomplished début production from the young company who, based on this showing, will be a name to watch with great interest in the future."

The Public Reviews

Our final stop was St Stephens, and what a stop it was. A huge thank-you goes out to the whole team, especially the wonderful Beckie Darlington for making it all happen and for making us feel so welcome.

After performing our show we came back on stage to play some music. The gig was a huge success and ended on a massive audience sing-a-long to Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons. It was brilliant fun and we loved how much emphasis people put on the word 'fu**ed' when joining in after a few beers - pure joy to our ears.

(if you'd like to book us for a wedding or a party, then please get in touch, seriously)

During the Fringe, we were also asked to be part of the fantastic Border Ballads at St Stephens - it was amazing to feel part of the experience and sight reading a verse in front of an audience was an absolute thrill. Thank-you Lorne!

The NORTH scheme was constructed not only to enhance the creative side of our minds, but to fill up our metaphorical producer 'tool bag' as well. We met many inspiring people like David Edmunds from Dep Arts, Annie Rigby, Nazli Tabatabai-Khatambakhsh, Dan Bye, Kate Craddock and many more.

Since meeting these influential people, we've produced three of our own events, two fundraisers and one social night called 'North Night' all of which went down a storm and we managed to raise lots of money towards our summer tour. Through doing this, we also began to form relationships with other young theatre makers, musicians, artists and writers in the region which is something we are very keen to build on so that eventually we'll have a huge pool of young creatives that will make lots of work together and support each other on projects - it's already happening as we speak/write!
These relationships are still growing and just last week we were very honoured to perform at the Jabberwocky Market Festival in Darlington (Stan's home town) organised by Caroline Pearce, a contact we made through NORTH - it was an absolute blast, thank-you for having us Caroline! Will this be the last time we perform our beloved show "The Man Who Thought The Moon Would Fall Out Of The Sky?"...
Who knows? We're going to keep you guessing for now.
Here's George having a think about it...

We couldn't have got here without the support of wonderful people from Northern Stage and beyond. We are seven very lucky people to have been a part of this new scheme and we're sure whoever is in North 2014 will have just as fabulous experience as we did.

We are now ready to take on the world as 'The Letter Room' and are already planning big things for 2014.. After this years experience, we're not only thinking about 'a show' we're thinking about a future.
We're not finished for 2013 just yet though, at the moment we are curating some brilliant events for Juice Festival - a dreamy launch party and a spooky Big Read - for more information please visit the website here. It's going to be so much fun, please come along and say hello!

We would like to say a humungous thank-you to anyone and everyone who has supported us in any way over the last year, it means so much to us.

We hope you have enjoyed reading our little trip down memory lane.

Love from,
The Letter Room x

Sunday 1 September 2013

Hi! It’s Meghan on this blog and it’s been a while!
We’ve been so busy that we have neglected our poor blog so this is going to be a big one! George will be taking over later.
So in the last entry we were preparing ourselves for the first stop of our festival tour - Latitude. What can I say? We just had the most amazing time! We kicked off the programme of acts in the Main theatre tent playing to an audience of over 500 people, our largest audience yet. We had no walk outs, which in a festival like this where’s there’s so many more things going on, was a great sign. Before our tour we had an intensive R&D week (and I mean intensive!) where we spent some time refining and adding a few bits in that we ran out of time to put in our last show. It was great revisiting some of the ideas we had worked on in the original devising process. The new bits of the show seemed to go down really well with the Latitude crowd and the reviewers too
"Slick and impressive, moving along at breakneck pace with some complex role-swapping and multiple parts played by the seven-strong company...each performance is flawless and a credit to an energetic and creative devising process that the company so clearly enjoys... one of the most vibrant and engaging entries into the theatre circuit in years."
What's on Stage

The Public Reviews
You can read the full reviews here:
For this leg of our journey we were joined by the lovely Sam, our technician for the show. He was truly fantastic, with expert ninja skills and a clean drivers license, he was he perfect fit for us.
Having said that we did get lost on the way there (not pointing any fingers...cough cough Sam!!) things could have turned nasty when we ended up in a disturbing Royston Vasey-style village. Luckily for us, the regulars at the village pub took pity on us bewildered drama types and guided us to the glorious fields of Henham Park. We arrived in pitch black and I spent the next 4 hours trying to put my tent up, it soon became a 7 man job and I’m still not sure we did it properly. Next day the sun was shining and it was hot hot hot resulting in a fair bit of sun burn for the NORTH crew, especially poor Alex, I think she was glowing in the dark at one point! George did us proud in an extremely sweaty mosh pit (apparently people like to mosh to Bloc Party, who knew?!) We ate crisps. We danced in the woods. Sam showed us all his secret ninja side and totally floored Michael. We ate crisps.  Michael bought his trusty ‘Latitude’ hat, which never left his head, even when he was asleep. We ate crisps.  Alice provided lots of glitter for which Stan was extremely excited about and Maria totally worked the glowstick look.
Latitude is a beautiful festival, the crew we met were so helpful and welcoming and for that we can’t thank them enough. We feel extremely proud and lucky to have been a part of it and we definitely hope to return next year.
We've arrived in one piece!
Wrists of power...they got you into nice toilets and a green room with free tea.
Workin' the crowd baby
A performers present from the Latitude crew, these guys are pure lush man!

Next stop: Edinburgh fringe. St Stephen’s August 20th 9pm.
Northern Stage at St Stephen's is a new adventure for Northern Stage and some theatre-makers, organisations and artists from the greater north of England. After the huge success in 2012 they’ve decided to go back. Again they have a rich and varied programme that really shows off some of the most exciting work from the north of England. We cannot tell you how pleased we are to be part of something so remarkable.
Thanks again to everyone who supported this tour, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Megs x

Alright! George here. So we've not long got back from our debut performance at the fringe and what a hoot it was. Northern Stage welcomed us into their lovely venue St Stephen's church for a one night only lunar spectacular. Having spent all day rehearsing amongst dusty pews and hymn books, and chucking flyers about on the royal mile we were very excited to perform 'the man who thought the moon would fall out of the sky' to the fringe crowd. And what a crowd. Not quite knowing what to expect in terms of numbers, we were absolutely thrilled to sell out St Stephens stage 1, and a more welcoming and most importantly loud audience we couldn't have asked for.

After the show, we played a free gig for the audience, welcoming them to enjoy a casual drink and to listen to some folky hip hop mash ups. And we had an absolute whale of a time doing so. Alice's famous egg shaker made a guest appearance in 'No Diggity' and Stan remembered all the chords to 'somewhere only we know'. Kit kats all round!

New name Our gig also served another purpose, besides getting St Stephens to throw some shapes, we also came to announce our brand new name. As the NORTH of 2014 draws nearer, we are ready to spread our hypothetical wings and continue our theatrical journey. After many late nights of deliberation and scientific studies we are proud to announce our shiny new name....

Our summer festival tour now reaches its final leg. In the wake of the fringe we're now preparing for our next adventure. Tuning our ukuleles, packing books into suitcases, searching feverishly for the egg shaker and putting our sea legs on. BESTIVAL 2013 on the sunny Isle of Wight, here we come!

GUEST BLOG: GEMMA HIRST

Meeting NORTH
So when the arts in the north east are suffering due to cut backs (that is another story) as a fellow performer the moral on that subject is low. However when you meet a company of enthusiastic graduates whose passion for the arts is mutual then your love for the arts returns.

Those graduates that I mention just happen to form NORTH Theatre Company. Northern Stage’s new associate theatre company, North are a company put together by Northern Stage in January and its aim is to support the best up and coming talent from performance graduates in the North East.

The talented young actors rummaged and researched through the Tyne and wear archives. Have managed to come up with a play that is based on the man who thought the moon would fall out of the sky. Now I am sworn to secrecy and I promised I wouldn’t say too much about their play, so I won’t. What I will say that NORTH use creative performance techniques to tell a curious tale of a man’s life. A man who was fascinated by the moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYk442U13pI&feature=youtu.be

Rehearsals
I was fortunate to watch NORTH rehearsing. To see them generating a variety of ideas was inspiring. The group think outside the box, going into detail they seem to know what each other are thinking. Just shows the camaraderie between them. Sometimes if NORTH loses their sense of direction then they are soon set back on track, with their director Susan Mulholland.

The company are going from strength to strength since their previous show in March and are gaining some great support from the likes of the Art Council. After watching their rehearsals, I look forward to seeing the show develop into a performance which will, I’m sure be out of this world. NORTH is set to be blowing the minds of audiences at the Latitude Festival in July:. The company have been booked by high profile festivals that will be touring over the summer such as, Bestivalin September:  and Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the prestigious venue of St Stephens with Northern Stage in August. NORTH Theatre Company are the first young company in the region to be programmed by venues such as these and I am over the moon with joy for them (excuse the pun).

Almost there...

We're almost there, the we fund is a mere £312 away from our target!! Please help us get to these national festivals with the some brilliant artists and help fly the flag for great theatre in North East. Haway we can do it! Look I'll even give you some horrendous pictures of what we actually look like most of the time. None of this filtered, black and white hipster shiz.

Can we all check Maria's appalled expression

Hansen are well and truly back. Mmmm bop.

Pretending they know what they're doing....

None of us are bass players. This is all we could do with it.

Double bass love

And this is just simply nauseating.

We hate each other so much
So if you could spare a few pennies, and help us reach our target, receive some wonderful personalised gifts from us then visit our we fund page here

Handmade by George

Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars eat out yo hearts. (Nice shoes)

A cheeky little hello to you lovely people. It's rather nice to back and writing another post. It's been busy down NORTH HQ of late and we are so excited for our Summer Festival Tour.

What have we been up to? Well. Where to start. Meetings with the Arts Council, meetings at Northern Stage, hosting a fundraiser, busking down Hoult's Yard for the Late Shows, making plans with a certain festival that is coming up in October (we'll be curating some very exciting and juicy events...(excellent world play there...have you guessed it?).

And may I take this opportunity to introduce you to the newest member of North, the egg shaker. We are serious Actor-Musicians donchaa know.

Wee Cutie

We also have another new addition to the family, as you can see by the sheer joy in my face I am VERY, VERY excited.

So let me take you back a few weeks and keep you up to speed with the Lunar party. Our first fundraiser featuring an abridged version of the show and a some songs we'd put together, including our all time favourite acoustic version of "No Diggity". Meghan very much enjoys singing "east-side to the west-side' and "phat rides" no less.

Rosa and Niall, our lovely Stage Door Group members

Guests enjoying the MANY fairy lights (spot Maria's intoxicated mother in the background...)

Chin Wagging

It was a wonderful evening and thank you so much to all who came down. We also made a film documenting our journey so far which should be on our YouTube page very soon. We spent a day with type writers and tea lights in the loft of Northern Stage making the stop motion for the film. We do love a stop motion we do.

It's really lovely not only working as a collective of actors but also film-makers and musicians. We're hoping to, one day, be a highly sought after wedding band. For realz.

North's female string duo...

In all honesty though, we're having great fun building our repertoire of music for future gigs and busking ventures.

Megs and Alex rehearsing their gorgeous rendition of Fast Car.

Workin' and a Playin' hard down Hoult's Yard

Wor Maria turned a ripe old 25 too and we bought her a gluten free chocolate cake sprinkled with gluten free caramel slice squares, haribo and strawberries. We're dead good like that.

As summer draws ever closer as do our exciting plans for NORTH's festival tour, in which we will be taking your favourite moon themed adventure 'The Man Who Thought The Moon Would Fall Out Of The Sky' to your favourite summer getaways; Lattitude and Bestival, where we plan to give 2013's festival goers and chance to have a closer look at the Ernest Scrapbook and take them on a tent based journey to the moon and back.

And as if our minds hadn't been blown already with our current festival theatre endeavours we are very, very, very excited to announce that we will also be going to the Edinburgh Fringe an all!

insert fanfare and mental guitar riffs!

We will be joining Northern Stage at St Stephen's church, who at last years fringe brought some brilliant theatre and pieces of cake from the region to over 8000 theatre and cake enthusiasts. If you missed the fringe last year, here's an idea of what Northern Stage can do to a church when left unattended....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASrAjMqMBN0

So with a box of notebooks full of moon facts, a dusty piano and a strawberry daiquiri soaked scrapbook we now begin our quest to the Edinburgh Fringe! let's hope the moon stays put till then.

We'd also like to give massive THANKYOU for all the support we've had to make this tour a reality! Myself quite gobsmacked at the generosity and the kind words that have been flooding in our direction! we've already received half the funding we need on our lovely WeFund application! Here's the link if you fancy a cheeky ganders  http://wefund.com/project/north-summer-festival-tour/p57713/

In our next instalment, we shall regale you with stories of our fund raising journey so far. featuring some snapshots and insider accounts of NORTH's LUNAR PARTY last week and some LATE SHOWS antics and tomfoolery.

And on that bombshell....
Peace and love from George and the rest of the lovely NORTH team x

NORTH hit the road...

FINALLY!

It's no longer a secret and we can stop teasing you with "announcements to come". It's official. The Man Who Thought the Moon Would Fall Out of the Sky is coming to a field near you! NORTH can now announce that we'll be touring to Latitude and Bestival this summer and hopefully the Edinburgh Fringe.

We're so excited that the legacy of NORTH, and the story of Ernest and She will be living on.

Find us in Latitude's line-up with the likes of other amazing people we love...Dan Bye, Les Enfants Terrible, The Wrong Crowd.

And this year it's HMS Bestival so we best get our thinking caps on for some crackin' festival get up (it's the fancy dress festival to top them all!)

Latitude's Theatre Land...
Our home for the summer?

Now we need your support to make this all happen!
We are now trying to establish ourselves as an independent company. Our new aim is simple: to make world-class theatre from within the North East. Our ambitions are high, and we aren’t quite there yet, but that is where you come in! This summer we are hoping to undertake a small national tour of our show.

The Lake Stage, Latitude

We’ve received sponsorship from the wonderful McKenna’s at Northern Stage, Tim Bailey from Xsite architecture and Friends of the RSC as well as Northern Stage themselves, who have been tremendous with their in-kind support - ranging from good advice and cake to rehearsal space.
In conjunction with other fundraising efforts, we’ve arrived at £1880 as the figure to take these seven lovable rogues* on the road!

*DISCLAIMER: you may not find us roguish or lovable. That’s ok, we don’t hold it against you. Thank you for reading this far.

In a time of growing financial uncertainty in the Arts we feel that opportunities like the one presented to us are important for paving the way for more young theatre makers to create new work. We hope to build a network of emerging talent, both regionally and nationally. Being part of these renowned festivals is a chance to share our work with new audiences, theatre promoters and press. This is why the Festival tour is an important stepping stone towards a National tour in 2014. We hope this, in turn, will grow both our reputation and that of new work in the region. We want to encourage theatre makers, like ourselves, to believe that ambitious touring, even in the time of cuts, is achievable. Its like wor Gran’s always say: “Shy Bairns Get Nowt”

So every donation, big or small, really means a lot to us and that’s why as a little thank you, there’s some cracking gifts. Take a look at our We Fund page to find out how you can donate...and take a first peek at our trailer for the show.

Lets send some North East Vibes to these top festivals!

One Evening

Hello! Reet, so, last week was our NORTH SOCIAL and I shall tell you all. Friday 12th April, Stage 3 was host to actors, directors, writers, photographers, musicians, theatre makers, project managers, entrepreneurs, producers, marketing-ers (is that a word? it is now...)and the words on everyones lips were "can we do this again?". Success!!

Stage 3 lookin' lush!

With music from Ali and George, an acoustic duo doing some amazing covers and original material. You can catch them on the first Tuesday of every month at Redhouse, Newcastle Quayside. It was a perfect starter to the night, relaxed and informal and a joy to listen to. Ali heads Alphabetti Spaghetti a theatre company based at the Dog and Parrot in Newcastle. Coming up very soon is "3 Shorts" 6th-14th June, 3 short plays written by 3 comedy writers in the North East. This lot have some funny bones, a building and some hot talent. They're a good giggle them Alphabetti Spaghetti's so I suggest you go see what they're up to.

Ali and George makin' sweet music

We had the bangin' Bandicoot Theatre Company, top notch crew doing top notch stuff. They'll be appearing at this year's GIFT Festival in May, so don't miss them! I can't tell you too much about the installation, it's all top secret stuff, all I can say is that it's pure brilliance.

Bandicoot's Chris and Jess hangin' oot with the camera

One sneaky Bandicoot preview...
We had some more music from the young talent of Slow Moving Targets. They played a mixture of originals and covers, but in my opinion they should get writing more original songs, three lads, sickeningly young to be that good...a little like the Arctic Monkeys. I think we should watch this space...

The lovely Slow Moving Targets

Aaaand films from Future Talents who were also photographing the event. An enterprise providing actors with the highest quality headshots, showreels, voicereels and website design and very reasonable prices.

Dan from Future Talents (with the lovely shirt)

All these people gave up their time for free, for which we are hugely grateful and they made the night. So as you can see, it's still not grim up north, in fact, it never was. May this be the beginning of many more socials!

Megs was happy snappin' away as usual so peruse some of these beautiful people who came along on Friday night.

Look at all their lovely smiling faces! During the night we invited people to a table of postcards with a small post box, we asked them to write and suggest what they would like to see happen in Newcastle, what they'd like to make, and who they want to collaborate with. We can't wait to read them!

Gan' on write us a postcard

It was also someone's birthday that night, our romantic lead of NORTH, Stan, Stan the Man turned 21 on the very same night. And we might have asked the lovely Slow Moving Targets to play their own version of Happy Birthday while we couldn't resist a tender moment of a slideshow of baby pictures, I think he was suitably embarrassed. Aaaaah to be 21 again....Happy Birthday Stan!

Cake. Cake. Cake. Mmmm. CAKE!

Spot the semi-naked Stanley...
So. A big fat smacker of a smooch to everyone who came, who drank, laughed, relaxed, listened and enjoyed. And thank you again for those wonderful people sharing their talent in the room, I urge you to meet them all. Now...for the next one! Don't miss it.
